Foster care is the combination of something utterly broken and something exceptionally beautiful. Unfortunately there are situations where biological parents cannot care for their children. This is the broken. Their decisions end up shaping the trajectory of their child’s life.
Foster families step in and offer sanctuary for the child however temporary it may be. This is the beautiful. The hope and prayer is almost always that the biological parent will make the choices necessary to reunify with their child. That doesn’t always happen.
Sometimes the broken part of foster care is made whole through reunification, and sometimes it is made whole through adoption. We weren’t fostering in order to adopt, but this incredible child needed a family, and it turns out we needed him too!
